System and information integration concerns IT-supported exchange of data and decisive information between IT systems in a production company. Production IT and automation systems in the different departments of the company are often introduced to optimize one or more processes in the specific department. In spite of local optimisations the exchange of information between departments is often manual or only automated to a limited degree. IT-supported integration may be divided into horizontal and vertical considerations. Horizontal integration takes place between departments and/or production sections on the same level in the company. Vertical integration concerns the integration from Production IT systems (MES, Batch) in the different production sections to administrative systems (ERP, MRP).

In terms of the internal supply chain and the internal business processes in a company the exchange of information between departments is of great importance to the performance of the company. Often work procedures in one department depend on information about the performance of work procedures in other departments. Thus, work procedures in one department may be delayed or disturbed as a result of problems in another department. However, if there is transparency between the departments in the company then steps may be taken before a given process is initiated. On a local level a better planning foundation is achieved in each department, which makes it possible to switch around orders very quickly, thus optimising order performance.
